2000 25th August 1813
On 24th August 1813 3nd Allied corps defeated 8th
French corps at the battle of Palencia
On the following day the French retreated towards Pancorbo
This was the third allied victory in as many days.
This series of defeats has forced Marshal Suchet to abandon
his forward line of defence from Aguillar to Palencia. His three corps are in retreat, and he must
attempt to rally them on the main Bayonne to Burgos road from Pancorbo to
Aranda.
The situation for the French is now critical. If they are unable to hold this vital road
they will lose control of the whole of central and southern Spain.
